Jock Talk: UVic pitch hosts non-stop rugby

UVic women’s rugby squad hosts a busy weekend on the Wallace Field pitch this weekend. The Vikes open play Saturday versus Lethbridge at 10:50 a.m. before facing Alberta at 12:50 p.m. and Calgary  at 2:50 p.m. Sunday brings tilts between the Vikes and UBC at 10:25 a.m. and Fraser Valley at 12:25 p.m.

With the UVic men’s basketball team competing in Lethbridge, Alta., the women’s team is alone at CARSA this week to host MacEwan in a best-of-three. The Vikes hit the floor at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. If necessary, Game 3 will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. Visit govikesgo.com for details.

The Vikes men’s field hockey team hits the turf against West Van A at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19.

In Div. 2 men’s rugby Saturday, Feb. 18, the Castaway Wanderers 3 team takes on Westshore 2 at 1 p.m. at Windsor Park. Head to the park and cheer on your home-town team!

In Lower Island women’s soccer, the premier league Castaways Highlanders FC takes on Victoria Athletics at 8 p.m. tonight (Feb. 17) at PISE. In Div. 1 play, Bays United FC tkicksoff against Prospect Lake at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 at Layritz Also Saturday, Castaways FC faces Vic West United at PISE at 6 p.m.

Registration is open for the Greater Victoria Minor Football spring season with a gear-up session Saturday, Feb. 18 at Copley Park. Oak Bay players suit up for the Gordon Head Raiders. Learn more at victoriafootball.ca.

The Victoria Grizzlies start the week with a three-game roadtrip to Vernon, West Kelowna and Penticton Friday through Sunday before returning to the Island. In a Friday and Saanich home-and-home with Nanaimo, the Grizz finish the regular season st the Q Centre Saturday, Feb. 25 when they host Nanaimo at 7 p.m.
