Field hockey fills UVic turf

The Vancouver Island Women’s Field Hockey League boasts a full slate of games this weekend at UVic

Saturday will be a busy day at the University of Victoria field hockey turf. The Vancouver Island Women’s Field Hockey League opens the day with the Patriots and the Mariners at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Flickers and Lynx 1 at 11 a.m. and the Cardinals and Lynx 2 at 12:30 p.m. The Stellers and Ravens play at 2 p.m., with the Kestrels and Renegades at 3:30 p.m., and the Pirates and Demons ending the day off at 5 p.m. Just two games hit the turf Sunday: the Sailors and Blue Jays play at 9 a.m., with the Kestrels and Ravens at 3:30 p.m.

Several men’s games will also take the field Sunday. The Hawks and Marauders start the morning at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Mutineers and Oak Bay at noon. Finally, the Tigers and Rebels end the day with their 1:30 p.m. game.

The boys of summer are back in action at Lambrick Park this coming week.

The Victoria Eagles high-performance baseball teams welcome the Calgary Blues for the second annual March friendly tournament March 20 to 22.

The three-day event will pit the visitors against some of the Islands’ best baseball talent. The Victoria Eagles Premier squad will start the tournament playing the Eagles AAA team at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Victoria Mariners playing Calgary 2 at 2:30 p.m. The Mariners face Calgary 1 at 5 p.m. while the Eagles Premier squad finishes the day versus Calgary 1 at 5 p.m.

Saturday, March 21 will see the Junior Premier Eagles play the Eagles AAA team at noon, before taking on Calgary 2 at 2:30 p.m. The Eagles AAA team finishes the day against Calgary 2 at 5 p.m.

The final day of the tournament pits the Eagles AAA against Calgary 2 at 9:30 a.m., while the Eagles Junior Premiers face Calgary 1 at noon and Calgary 1 plays the Parksville Royals at 2:30 p.m. before the tournament concludes on an Island note with the Royals and Premier Eagles playing at 5 p.m. All games are played at Lambrick Park in Gordon Head.

Get involved in baseball from the other side with the 2015 B.C. Baseball umpiring clinics later this month. Level 1 umpiring course runs March 23 and  25 at 7 p.m. and March 26 and April 2 at 6 p.m., at Central Middle School. The day-long Level 2 umpiring course will be held March 28 at 8:30 a.m. at Pacific Institute of Sports Excellence.

On campus, the University of Victoria men’s rugby squad will be out of town this weekend to face the Vancouver Rowing Club, however, they’ll be back in town for a local matchup against the Castaway Wanderers March 21 at Oak Bay’s Windsor Park.

The Victoria Cougars are smoothly working their way through the VIJHL playoff bracket. The Cougars swept the Westshore Wolves in four games with a 7-3 win on Tuesday night. The Cougs will play the winner of the North Island final, where the Campbell River Storm held a 2-1 lead over the Comox Valley Glacier Kings at press time.
