Beach fires are not OK in Oak Bay, a group of youth was reminded the night of May 7.
A group of about 10 was hanging out in the 900-block of Beach Drive when Oak Bay police were called for a large beach fire, the department said in a news release.
Police had attendees douse the fire and leave the premises as it was also private property.
Propane, briquettes and gas are fine, but wood-burning fires remain off-limits on Oak Bay beaches.
It was among the 100 calls for service the week of April 30 to May 7 as reported by the Oak Bay Police Department.
Oak Bay does not allow outdoor wood fires, at the beach or in the backyard – barbecues and other specifically designed cooking appliances are OK. Portable gas fires are allowed at the beach from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
