A 17-year-old skateboarder was in stable condition in hospital suffering from significant head injuries after being struck by a car early Friday morning.

Around 1 a.m. police were called to the 3200-block of Shelbourne St. by the driver of the vehicle that hit the young Victoria man.

The teen was rushed to hospital and remains there in stable condition.

Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen said the skateboarder was wearing dark clothing and was skating on the road.

"The municipality provides areas for skateboarders to use, and the travel portion of the roadway is not a suitable location," he said.

The driver of the vehicle has fully co-operated with police investigators.

Speed and alcohol have been ruled out as contributing factors in the incident.
