Resurfacing work along two main Saanich corridors is expected to be completed by the fall.

The work is part of upgrades to more than 157 kilometres of roadway on Vancouver Island, announced by the province in May. In Greater Victoria, major resurfacing work is taking place on Highway 17 and McKenzie Avenue.

The work is well underway, with 22 kilometres getting resurfaced from Vanalman Avenue to Vernon Avenue and Burnside Road West to Douglas Street. This segment of the provincial project is expected to cost $6.5 million and be completed in the fall.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure noted workers are currently preparing the road – “focusing on high-distressed areas and road base improvements” – before the new asphalt will be applied.

In a construction notice, DriveBC said paving operations(including McKenzie Avenue ramps) are taking place overnight between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday with lane closures and expected delays.

The province is reminding motorists to observe construction zone speed limits and to follow the direction of traffic control personnel. More updates on the project can be found at drivebc.ca.
