Province places former B.C. Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver on Oak Bay police board

A prominent politician is among the latest appointees to the Oak Bay police board.

Former B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver was officially named to the board as of June 30.

Effective that day, Wendy Zink is re-appointed as a board director with Weaver, Heather Cochran, and Lawrence Lewis as newly appointed members. Current member Christine Hall’s term continues automatically through this year.

Weaverserved as MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head from 2013 to 2020. He stepped down as the Green Party leader in early 2020 and did not seek reelection later that year. The climate scientist and longtime University of Victoria faculty member and researcher is also an Oak Bay High grad.

Oak Bay Mayor Kevin Murdoch, who chairs the board said: “The new directors will be busy right away in working on a new five-year Oak Bay police strategic plan due by December.”

In the coming months appointees have provincial and local police board training and orientation.

Appointments to the board are limited to a maximum six years. The board mandate stipulates appointees must balance financial, labour relations, legal and general management expertise, along with developed analytical skills and judgment.
