Thefts from boats and vehicles, and charges being recommended against an Oak Bay man, are listed in Oak Bay’s weekly police briefs.
On Jan. 15 police received a complaint that a rudder handle and its’ hinges were stolen from a sail boat docked in the Oak Bay Marina. The resident told that police that the theft could have occurred overnight, and that they believe the parts appear to have been sought out.
Later that evening Oak Bay’s police and fire departments responded to a fire on Larkdowne Road. Two dogs were rescued from the house, and one first responded was treated for minor smoke inhalation.
On Jan. 16 an Oak Bay resident backed into a bus. The driver was trying to back their sedan out of a driveway along the 3000 block of Foul Bay Rd. when the accident happened. No one was hurt, though the driver got a ticket for Reversing When Unsafe.

Police have provided more details on the incident Jan. 17 when police needed help from K9 officer Hitch to track a suspect. Police are recommending charges of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle against an Oak Bay resident as a result. Officers from Oak Bay and Saanich initially went to the area of Foul Bay Road and Townley Street in Oak Bay in response to calls of a possible impaired driver. The driver tried to lose police once they caught up with him – first by fleeing at high speeds, then by ditching his car in the Carnarvon Park ball field and fleeing on foot. That’s when Hitch came in, tracking the man to a house.
On Jan. 19, police got a complaint that a vehicle was broken into overnight along the 3000 block of Gibbs Rd. and that loose change was taken. Later that night police received a complaint of a break and enter to a residence in the 2600 block of Foul Bay Rd. Police say the suspect broke a window and took some small electronics. The owners were away at the time and the investigation is still on going.
