Bill Reid’s Grizzly Bear Mantelpiece has a new permanent home at the Royal B.C. Museum, thanks to a $750,000 donation by the Audain Foundation.

Anne and Douglas Stevenson commissioned the renowned Haida artist to carve the piece out of cedar in 1954 for their family home in Williams Lake.

The carving was unveiled Friday as the latest addition to the museum’s First Peoples Gallery.

“It is vital that we have contemporary works on display in the First Peoples Gallery, in addition to our extensive collection of First Nation historical objects,” said Pauline Rafferty, RBCM CEO.
