Monterey Recreation Centre is not just a seniors’ centre.
Staff at Monterey rec want Oak Bay residents to know that the facility has programs catering to people age 50-plus, not just retirees.
“A lot of people think of us as a seniors’ centre, but we are trying to get the word out that Monterey rec centre welcomes people (age) 50-plus,” said Lesley Cobus, co-ordinator at Monterey rec. “And we’re trying to attract the baby boomers as they’re going into retirement.”
The rec centre offers a “kaleidoscope of courses” in topics such as languages, cooking, fitness, and literature. It also has more than 35 clubs that are low or no-cost, Cobus said.
“We just want (baby boomers) to know that part of a healthy retirement is keeping your mind and body active,” Cobus said. “We’re trying to keep people fit, and engaged, and healthy.”
The centre currently has about 2,046 members and the Oak Bay Senior Activity Association recently unveiled a commemorative plaque on the building.
The association, which was established in 1971 by a group of seniors, wanted a plaque to celebrate the Monterey rec centre’s 40th anniversary.
“It was felt important to recognize the original building and it’s purpose,” said Hellie McLelland, who lead the project.
One way the rec centre is providing “life-long learning and social opportunities” is by hosting a Rock n’ Roll Tribute Dance on June 16, featuring local rock ‘n’ roll dance band Rukus. The event takes place in the Garry Oak room, at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the band on at 7:15 p.m. Tickets, $23, include dinner and must be purchased in advance.
