Mental Health Week begins Sunday

Looking after yourself also means taking care of your mental well-being, and that of those you care about.

For the past 60 years, national Mental Health Week from May 1 to 7 has served as an important reminder of that. This year's province-wide theme is Thank You for Trusting Me, which recognizes the value of individuals who are a source of support for people living with mental health challenges.

The awareness week was founded nationally by the non-profit Canadian Mental Health Association. Last year, the B.C. division helped more than 18,000 people in the province through research, education and support.

To mark the anniversary and raise funds for youth mental health initiatives, the Ride Don't Hide spin-a-thon happens May 7 from noon to 2 p.m. at Steve Nash Fitness World and Sports Club locations.

The spin-a-thon celebrates Vancouver cyclist Michael Schratter reaching the halfway mark in his journey around the world for mental health.
