Local fundraising initiative addresses tampon recall

Period Posse checking donations during 10-day campaign

A recent product recall adds an extra layer of work for a local fundraising initiative.

As Period Posse launched a 10-day campaign to fundraise for menstrual products for people who can’t afford them, a recall was announced by Kimberly-Clark on a line of its Kotex tampons.

“We’re encouraging folks to check their donations or donate alternate brands,” said Lindsay Shaw, founder of the Period Posse. “However, Period Posse will check all incoming donations as well.”

Kimberly-Clark is recalling regular absorbency U by Kotex Sleek tampons in Canada and the United States after reports of the tampons coming apart and unraveling upon removal.

The company says that in some cases, tampon users sought medical attention “to remove tampon pieces left in the body.”

“The U by Kotex line has historically not been one of the more commonly donated brands,” said Shaw. “So far, we have not seen any recalled products donated. If we do see any recall products, we will contact Kimberly Clark and go through their return process.”

Menstrual cups, which Period Posse is also collecting, are an eco-friendly alternative to tampons.

The group hopes to fundraise $10,000 worth of products between tampons, pads, cups, clean underwear and cash.

Donations will be dispersed through several social services across Victoria, including Cool Aid, the 1up Single Parent Resource Centre, the Sandy Merriman House, Rock Bay Landing, SOLID, and several youth groups.
