Council news - Grocery gets shade, dogs get beach run

Veggies get more shade

Cadboro Bay Food Forum will be a bit spiffier this summer.

A five-peak post-and-beam covered structure will be built as cover for the gardening section facing the road. Council approved a .3-metre setback variance permit for an open-air, heavy-timber shade structure with transparent polycarbonate roofing. It will be bounded by a decorative security fence outside the grocery store at 2585 Cadboro Bay Rd., owned by Bill Tam.

Local fruit, vegetables and flowers will be for sale under the section. At 19.5 m by 5.8 m, the display area will be larger than the current one, architect Silvia Bonet noted in a covering letter to council.

Dogs get their full day

Dog owners will soon have more time to walk their pooches on McNeill Bay beach.

Council passed an amendment this week to allow dogs on the beach between sunrise and 11 a.m. and from 7 p.m to sunset, from May through September. From October through April, dogs can have unlimited play time on the beach.

Previously, dogs could be on the beach anytime in winter months, but had more restricted hours between May and September.
