At Oak Bay’s St. Christopher’s Montessori School children are given the opportunity to make creative choices in their learning.

St. Christopher’s Montessori School still has some availability for their half-day pre-school and kindergarten programs this fall. If you’ve been looking for a smaller, more hands-on program for your child, then St. Christopher’s might be just what you’ve been looking for!

“What makes our program so appealing for many parents is our whole body, mind and heart approach to educating children,” says principal Lisa Grant. “We operate in three hour work periods and practice child-led learning, fostering a life-long love for knowledge in our students.”

What is Montessori?

The Montessori approach to education focuses on hands-on learning, self-directed activity and collaborative play. Children are allowed to move at their own pace through all parts of the classroom while following the BC education curriculum.

“While our approach to educating children is different, the end result is the same — or in many cases better than what parents might expect from other education styles,” Grant says. “Our approach encourages independence and confidence in children that helps carry them through the rest of their lives, regardless of if they stay with a Montessori education or eventually move onto a more traditional school setting.”

Programs at St. Christopher’s Montessori School

St. Christopher’s offers a half day preschool program for ages three to four and a full day kindergarten program. The school itself has two classrooms, plus a well maintained yard with a modern playground and garden. Educators are certified by BC Teachers’ Federation and/or certified in Early Childhood Education, trained in the Montessori approach to education and licensed under Island Health. Parents can look forward to their children receiving a hands-on approach to their education that encourages them to use all five senses during the learning process.

All programs are a part of the Child Care Fee Reduction Initiative, meaning parents only pay a portion of the overall program fee.

“Our half-day preschool is $489 a month with CCFRI and our full-day Kindergarten is $331 a month,” Grant says. “We encourage interested parents to reach out sooner rather then later, as it’s unusual for us to have availability in either program.”
