B.C.’s police watchdog is looking for witnesses from a Victoria Police Department arrest that happened more than three years ago.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is seeking witnesses after a man was arrested by Victoria Police and suffered from serious injuries in a Sept. 26, 2020 incident.

The man says that he was arrested by members of the VicPD in the hallway of his apartment building in the 3000-block of Blanshard Street. He went to the hospital some time later after sustaining serious, but not life-threatening injuries during the arrest.

The police watchdog started its investigation last fall after it was notified of the incident on Nov. 11, 2023.

Any person who saw the arrest or has other relevant information about the incident is asked to contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477 or to fill out the contact form on iiobc.ca.

IIO’s role is to confirm if the man’s injury meets the threshold of serious harm which is defined by the Police Act and what role police actions could have or could have not played in his injuries.
