Campers will get an additional 35 days this year at Island View.
The Island View Beach Regional Park Campground in Central Saanich will see a pilot project extend its season until Oct. 9. Traditionally, it operates from the Victoria Day long weekend in May until the Labour Day weekend in September.
The extension was approved by the Capital Regional District’s parks committee on June 28 and subsequently the CRD board on July 12 after conversations with the District of Central Saanich. Earlier this year, the CRD submitted a temporary use permit renewal application to Central Saanich to allow for the operation of the campground for another three years.
This permit is required to ensure the campground and all other areas of the park are appropriately designated for use under Central Saanich bylaws – or until the CRD completes the Official Community Plan and Land Use Bylaw amendment that would be needed to ensure this.
The campground offers 18 beach-front RV sites, five treed tent trailer sites and 24 treed tent sites. All of the sites are reservable with no first-come, first-served options. Hydro, dumping stations and showers are not offered.
During the application review process, the CRD said Central Saanich expressed an interest in having the camping season extended at the site on a trial basis, thus prompting the pilot project.
This will see the site open this year until the Thanksgiving long weekend (Oct. 9).
CRD staff will review the pilot project and report back to the parks committee and CRD board in early 2024.
