A Copper Finch resonated with Oak Bay residents and visitors, capturing the people’s choice award in the eighth annual Arts Alive Sculpture Walk.
The sculpture by Erick James was among the six artworks under the theme of ‘kinship’ on loan from artists and set up around the district since last summer, inviting residents and visitors to take an art walk and vote for a favourite.

The powder-coated metal origami bird creation perched on a piece of driftwood overlooking McNeill Bay earned the most votes. Second place was Metamorphosis by Peter Vogelaar with Vordr by Frances Semple rounding out third.
Votes were collected online this year between August and November. The sculptures, which are available for purchase, will remain on display until April 2023. Walking maps are available at Oak Bay recreation centres and here. As part of the Arts Alive program, the people’s choice is traditionally considered for purchase by the district.
Arts Alive is now accepting submissions for 2023/2024 with the theme “What is home?” Artists can submit proposals online at oakbay.ca.
