Cabaret comes to Oak Bay this month as Company C presents its final show of the season.

This bold and gritty piece with music by Kander and Ebb and book by Joe Masteroff hits the Canadian College of Performing Arts performance hall Jan. 26 to Feb. 3. Directed by multi-award winning director Ron Jenkins, Cabaret aims to have audiences tapping toes, wiping eyes, and examining the world.

Cabaret, the winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, is set in the seedy Kit Kat Klub of Berlin as the Nazi party rises to power in the early ‘30s. It follows the story of English nightclub performer Sally Bowles, and her relationship with American writer Cliff Bradshaw. Overseeing the events of the show is the Emcee and Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub. Between the rise of the Nazi party, the love affair of a German boarding house owner and a Jewish fruit vendor, a prostitute, and the dancers of the nightclub, Cabaret delivers a raw and honest depiction of Berlin that eerily parallels the world we live in today.

Jenkins, the multi-award winning director, describes the show as “one of the greatest musicals of all time.”

“I first saw this show when I was 20 years old, and that performance has stuck with me all these years. I can’t wait to work with these incredibly talented students and bring this timeless and incredible musical to Victoria,” said Jenkins.

Company C is a six-month program offered only to graduates of the two-year performing arts diploma at the Canadian College of Performing Arts, giving young performers the chance to work on three professional shows, in a professional environment, with professional directors engaged in the industry.

The company has completed their first two shows; The Old Curiosity Shop directed by Sarah Rodgers, and Wintertime directed by Sara-Jeanne Hosie. Cabaret will be their final show of the season.

Cabaret shows in the performance hall at 1701 Elgin Rd. from Jan. 26 to FEb. 3. Tickets can be purchased at ccpacanada.eventbrite.com, or by calling the box office at 250-595-9970.
