A popular Oak Bay pedestrian thoroughfare is again available to the public after being closed for almost a year due to house construction adjacent to the path.
Mayor Nils Jensen and Susan, the resident who has lived on the street the longest, participated in a ceremonial ribbon cutting to reopen the Byron Street Pathway located at the top of Yale Street.
“The re-opening of this path represents one of the most important values of our neighbourhood which is the sense of community and sharing. I, for one, am happy to see the return of our friends and neighbours as they go to and from the Village,” said Kathryn MacLeod, Poets’ Corner Neighbourhood Association.
Between 100 and 200 residents would use the pathway every day, before having to find alternate routes in and out of Oak Bay Village once construction began.
The ribbon cutting ceremony was to highlight the reopening of the enhanced pathway and inform as many residents as possible that the shortcut is open again.
A tree was planted in honour of Sharon Williams, a great supporter of the project who passed away before the path was complete.
