Unlike some grads, Oak Bay High’s class of 2011 wants to leave behind something more permanent than graffiti on a bridge overpass.
Instead, they’ll be planting trees.
“We liked the idea that once they’re planted, they’ll be here for years,” said Abbey Glowicks.
The Grade 12 student is leading a project to plant 10 trees in the Currie Street and Transit Road neighbourhood near Windsor Park.
Working with Oak Bay parks arborist Chris Paul and his crew, on April 27 grads will plant two Garry oaks, three birch and one dogwood at the spot where six ailing maples were removed earlier this year.
The students have organized a grad breakfast to raise funds toward the $500 cost of the trees.
Oak Bay parks is donating one of the Garry oaks for the project. Those who would like to donate funds can call the school at 250-598-3361.
Glowicks said the tree-planting project also serves to underline the positive impact youth can have when they pursue an idea.
“We have all grown up in Victoria and have been blessed with an abundance of beautiful nature. We figure, why not give back to our environment?”
