In spring, Uplands Park blooms purple hues as camas pop up from a lush green backdrop.

Carefully tended to and restored by volunteers with the Friends of Uplands Park Society and Oak Bay Parks, the 75-acre park is home to Garry oak meadows and woodlands, maritime meadows and vernal pools.

Each year they invite residents to enjoy the camas meadows at potentially the peak of their beauty alongside other natural wonders and man-made fun, including music, food and learning.

Camas Day is Sunday, April 30 from noon to 3 p.m.. at the Beach Drive entrance to Cattle Point with more than 16 organizations at hand with displays. Songhees Elder and Knowledge-Keeper Florence Dick gives a welcome talk at noon.

“Last year we had over 400 people come to it on the warm sunny day and they really enjoyed it,” said Margaret Lidkea of The Friends of Uplands Park Society.

People can also enjoy the live music by the Bald Eagles Band, family activities, refreshments and outdoor prizes. Expert botanists Wylie Thomas and Matt Fairbarns, will lead wildflower walks into Uplands Park to see the restoration of the seas of blue camas, the other wildflowers and the globally endangered Garry oak ecosystem.
