Henderson Road has been struck off the list of roadways banning longboarders and complaints will now be maintained in a municipal database.
Council made the decision based on a report by engineering director Dave Marshall, stating no complaints about longboarding have been received from residents, however, he did recieve a letter from bicyclist. In that letter, dated Feb. 25, Bruce Kilpatrick explained how he was involved in a “serious accident” on Aug. 8, 2012 when a “skateboarder” kicked his board out, causing it to hit Kilpatrick’s bicycle wheel, resulting in a fall. He broke two bones in one of his hands, suffered severe road rash on his left arm and leg and sustained damage to his bike and helmet, which had to be replaced.
Marshall said banning longboarding on Barkley Terrace was initiated by residents and a ban on Henderson Road should be considered if and when residents there, start making complaints.
“At some point down the road, we may revisit this,” said Mayor Nils Jensen.
The amended bylaw, which received third reading at council Monday, adds Barkley Terrace to a list of roadways banning rollerskating, skateboarding, in-line skating and longboarding. The existing list includes Christie Way, any sidewalk or street abutting Oak Bay Avenue between Foul Bay Road and Monterey Avenue, Turkey Head Walkway, Sylvan Lane and Denison Road.
