Inn at Laurel Point head pastry chef April Iverson was busy in the hotel’s kitchen Wednesday putting finishing touches on her crew’s entry for the National Gingerbread Showcase.
As part of the annual fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity, Iverson’s gingerbread creation, and those of other professional and amateur chefs, were unveiled Thursday in the Terrace Ballroom at the Inn.
Iverson, a native of Saskatchewan, designed her team’s project “architect-style” after the grain elevators that were very much a part of the scenery around her hometown of Maicam.
“It kind of speaks to my past and where I’m from,” she said of her creation, which includes an elevator filled with presents and a stable complete with doughy reindeer, all sitting on a hillside of sugary snow.
Being involved with this charity-related project for a second straight year is “awesome,” she said. “I think it’s a great cause and there’s so many people in need. When you have a home you have a safe haven.”
The gingerbread works by various local bakers, amateur and professional, are on display in the Terrace Ballroom until Jan. 1. The public can vote for their favourite entry in exchange for a donation to Habitat for Humanity.
