Earth Day events slated for Easter weekend

Cyclists and conservationists are teaming up for Earth Day to share the wonder that is Uplands Park.

The Garry oak-laden park is the destination point for a cycle tour that begins at Emmanuel Baptist Church (2121 Cedar Hill X Rd.) at 11 a.m. on Good Friday (April 22).

The one-hour tour, led by Oak Bay cycle group the Spokesmen, winds through Oak Bay, stopping at Carnarvon Park, Oak Bay High, Monterey middle school and along the ocean, before winding up at Uplands Park.

A one-hour walk led by Jill Croft also begins at the church at 11 a.m. and will go along Cedar Hill Cross Road, to Cadboro Bay Road, through Uplands neighbourhood to Cattle Point.

Sponsored by the Friends of Uplands Park, the Community Association of Oak Bay and Oak Bay Parks, Earth Day activities also include a 9 a.m bird-watching walk starting from Cattle Point, and two guided nature walks begin there at 1 p.m.

Head to the Cattle Point entrance of Uplands Park for music at noon, provided by the Bald Eagles (the band, not the birds), face-painting, a treasure hunt and displays.

Hardy visitors are encouraged to try their hand at removing invasive species.
