While some of the best golfers in the world are descending on Toronto for the Canadian Open, University of Victoria linksmen were a few hours south of there capturing a national title last week.
With a 13-shot cushion, the UVic men’s golf team took the top spot on the leaderboard at the Canadian University/College Championship at the Fire Rock Golf Course in Komoka, Ont.
The Vikes men combined for under-par final rounds of 283 and 278 to finish the May 29 to June 2 tournament with a team score of -14. It’s the fourth national title for the UVic men’s program and the team’s first since 2006.
“The guys deserve it, they work really hard, they were really motivated,” head coach Justin Clews said in a news release. “It’s a huge accomplishment for our program and I’m stoked to see ‘2023’ get added to the championship banner in CARSA.”
All-Canadian Liam Mosher had the best individual performance on the Vikes team as he came in second place among all golfers at the tournament with a four-round -9. Zach Ryujin, also an All-Canadian, climbed four spots on the last day and his tournament score of -3 was good enough to tie for fourth overall.
The Vikes women’s team came in second place at the national final as the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds ran away from the rest of the field.
UVic’s Sukriti Harjai earned All-Canadian status thanks to her top-five finish on the individual leaderboard. Other Vikes making the top ten included Robin Conlin, who capped his UVic career with a seventh-place finish, and Cindy Koira, whose debut play landed her in ninth overall.
