Short mat tourney keeps local lawn bowlers warmed up for spring

Oak Bay Lawn Bowling Club rolled out the blue and green mats for guests from Nanaimo last weekend.

The local bowlers hosted a dozen members from the Nanaimo Lawn Bowling Club for a series of short mat games. Short mat is an indoor version of lawn bowling Oak Bay players turn to until warmer weather allows club members to once again play on the greens outsoide.

The 20-member Team Canada features five members of the Oak Bay club and will compete in the Short Mat Bowls World Championships in Strömstad, Sweden from March 16 to 18.

Oak Bay Lawn Bowling Club hosts a pair of open houses where guests can leran more about short mat bowling or outdoor lawn bowling March 25 and April 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. both days.
