For the 41st consecutive year, the Uplands Golf Club Annual Heart Tournament will support Heart Health at Royal Jubilee Hospital through the Victoria Hospitals Foundation.

The event includes lunch and dinner, 18 holes of golf, contests, raffles and a live and silent auction.

Proceeds from the Heart Tournament will complete the funding for a new heart catheterization laboratory C-arm. The C-arm is used for a variety of important cardiac diagnoses and procedures.

It allows caregivers to see real-time images of a patient’s heart and blood vessels by conducting a diagnostic test called an angiogram. The images show the location and size of any blockage in or near the heart and allow medical teams to determine the best life-saving approach.

It also allows them to perform an immediate procedure such as a balloon angioplasty or the insertion of a stent or a new heart valve, again using the real-time images from the C-arm to guide a physician’s meticulous tasks. With these images, doctors can unblock arteries, stop a heart attack or replace a diseased valve in a couple of hours at most.

These life-saving procedures reduce the need for general anesthetic or open heart surgery and patients go home, in many cases, the same day.

Since 1978, the Uplands Golf Club Heart Tournament has raised more than $2.6 million for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation to bring leading-edge cardiac equipment to Island Health and its Heart Health program at the Royal Jubilee Hospital.

This year, the women’s event is set for July 18 and the men play July 22. Register for the tournament at www.ugcheart.com.
