Layritz Little League has made history as the first Canadian team to finish in the top four of the Junior Little League Softball World Series.
“We advanced to the semifinals and I think we will be playing Latin America (Puerto Rico),” said coach Paul Tucker in an email.
“If we get by them we play in the finals on ESPN on Saturday.”
Last year Layritz won just one game at the tourney, but after dropping their first game 5-3 to the hosts from Kirkland (Wash.) on Sunday, Layritz has won two straight.
Ashley Penney hit a home run in the second inning and pitched four shutout innings as Layritz drubbed Escanaba (Mich.) 6-0 on Wednesday. Jenna Saunlier pitched the final three innings for the save.
On Thursday, Penney pitched all seven, earning a complete-game shutout in a 1-0 win over Honaker (Virg.).
The game’s only run came in the first innning, when leadoff hitter Stephanie Galitzine walked on four pitches and was doubled home by Saulnier.
