Jock Talk: Cricket hits Windsor all weekend

Div. 1 weekend cricket returns to Oak Bay Saturday, June 17 with the University squad taking on the Alcos at noon at the Windsor Park pitch. On Sunday, June 18 the Oak Bay team celebrates Father’s Day by taking on Albion, also at noon at Windsor Park.

In Div. 2 midweek play, Tuesday, June 20 has Ross Bay taking on Metchosin at 6 p.m. at Windsor Park.

Fireman’s Park will be hopping Saturday, June 17 for Tadpole-level baseball playoffs (9U). Games kick off at 10 a.m. and follow at noon and 2 p.m. Semi-finals continue Monday and Wednesday, with the final game taking to the Fireman’s diamond Saturday, June 24 at noon.

Following the tadpole finals, cheer on the this year’s players, coaches, umpires and volunteers at Carnarvon Ball Club’s closing ceremonies, Sunday at 10 a.m. at Carnarvon Park.

While it’s a slow week at home for high-performance baseball, the Premier Victoria Eagles and the Premier Victoria Mariners make up for it as they go head to head later this week. On Thursday, June 22 the rival teams take each other on at 6 p.m. at Layritz Field.

The Junior Premier Mariners have a packed weekend ahead of them, starting Saturday, June 17 when they host the Abbotsford Jr. Cardinals in a doubleheader at Layritz at 1 and 3:30 p.m. They then host he Parksville Royals, Sunday, June 18, in a 12 and 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.

Following the excitement of this month’s PGA event, Uplands Golf Club is now preparing for its annual Heart Tournament, which has raised close to $2.5 million for heart health at Royal Jubilee Hospital over the past 39 years. Women’s play will open Wednesday, July 19, followed by the men’s tourney, Sunday, July 23. For registration or sponsorship information, visit ugcheart.com.

After two games on the road, the league-leading Victoria Shamrocks return home to a packed Q Centre tonight (Friday, June 16) to host the New Westminster Salmonbellies at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, June 18 the ‘Rocks head up Island to take on the Nanaimo Timbermen, before returning to the Q Centre next Friday to welcome the Maple Ridge Burrards at 7:30 p.m.

Following a roadtrip to Coquitlam, the Junior Shamrocks host the Langley Thunder on Saturday, June 24 at 5 p.m. at the Q Centre.
