Jock Talk: Carnarvon ball registration deadlines loom

The second-ever champion of the Canada West Rugby 7s Series will be crowned this weekend when the University of Victoria Vikes women host the third and final tournament of the season at Wallace Field.

The Vikes enter the weekend with a perfect record of 12-0 and a six-point lead over the second-place Calgary Dinos.

Following a round-robin format, the Vikes’ weekend starts on Saturday, Feb. 24 with the UVic women taking on UBC at 10:20 a.m., followed by Thompson Rivers at 12:20 p.m. and Lethbridge at 2:20 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25 opens with the women taking on Alberta at 10:25 a.m., Fraser Valley at 12 p.m. and Calgary at 2:50 p.m. All games take place at UVic.

In men’s premier rugby, the Castaway Wanderers take on Burnaby Lake Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2:30 p.m. in Windsor Park. Head to the park early to cheer the CW’s Div. 1 players as they take to the pitch against Comox at 11:15 a.m. Then at 12:45 p.m., Castaway Wanderers 2 face Burnaby Lake 2 while the Castaways’ Premier Women host Seattle.

Back at the UVic turf, Sunday, Feb. 25 has the UVic men’s field hockey team taking on the West Coast Kings at 12:30 p.m.

On the road, the men’s and women’s Cross Country teams represent Victoria at the Canada West Championships Feb. 23 and 24 in Winnipeg. The UVic swim teams are also at the U Sports Championship in Toronto through Saturday, Feb. 24.

In community sports, women’s playoff soccer has the Div. 1 Castaways FC playing the Vic West FC tonight (Friday, Feb. 23) with a 6 p.m. kick-off at Finlayson Turf. Saturday, Feb. 24 has the Div. 2 Castaways FC facing the Gorge FC at 6 p.m. at Hampton Turf.

Men’s soccer continues for Oak Bay with the Div. 3B Castaways FC taking on the Zgoda Juniors FC on Saturday, March 3 at 4:10 p.m. at Blanshard field.

With ball season on the horizon, Carnarvon Ball Club is accepting registration for its spring baseball and softball seasons. The deadline is March 2 for baseball with assessments starting soon after. On the softball side, players born between 1999 and 2012, can register to March 1, with a $50 surcharge for late registration until March 9. Visit carnarvonballclub.com/leagues to learn more.
