Jock Talk: Basketball returns to CARSA this weekend

Basketball returns to the CARSA hardwood Friday and Saturday as the University of Victoria men’s and women’s basketball teams host the University of Northern BC.

The women get things started tonight, tipping off at 6 p.m., with the men following at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 20, the women hit the court at 5 p.m. and the men at 7, also at CARSA – the Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities. Visit govikesgo.com to learn more about tickets.

Also from UVic this week, the men’s and women’s swim teams return to local waters, competing in the SFU Dual meet at Commonwealth Pool on Saturday, Jan. 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In high school sports, the Oak Bay senior girls basketball team hosts St. Michaels University School on Monday, Jan. 22 at 5:45 p.m. Then on Tuesday, Jan. 23, the Oak Bay senior boys host the SMUS boys at 7:30 p.m.

Now well into January, many runners and walkers have started their training toward this year’s goals. If that includes the Oak Bay Half Marathon, 10K, Relay and Kids Run, registration is open for the May 27 event that weaves through the heart of Oak Bay’s shopping district before looping out along the scenic seaside route of Beach Drive. The new year also brings a new deal for early registration, good through March 15. Race registration continues through May 25.

It’s a full weekend in Oak Bay women’s soccer. The Div. 1 Castaways FC takes on the Gorge FC this Sunday, Jan. 21 at 12 p.m. at Hampton Turf. Later the same day Bays United FC hosts Vic West FC at 4:30 p.m. at the Oak Bay High turf. In Div. 2 action, Castaways FC meets the Cowichan Outlaws Saturday, Jan. 20 at PISE for a 6 p.m. kick-off. Come Sunday, Jan. 21, Bays United FC visits the SFFC Cascades at 10 a.m. at Lochside.

Men’s play starts on Friday, Jan. 19 with the Div. 3B Castaways FC playing the Zgoda Juniors FC at 7 p.m. at PISE. Later that day the U21 Bays United FC take on Juan de Fuca at 8 p.m. at Juan de Fuca.

While local rugby squads are all out of town this weekend, watch your calendars for Jan. 27 when play returns to Windsor Park in a big way.
