Vasek Pospisil serves for Canada during the 2011 Davis Cup

Canada’s Pospisil, Raonic fall to Djokovic, Serbia in Davis Cup semis

Vernon's Vasek Pospisil was Serbia's final victim. Pospisil and his swollen ankle lost to Janko Tipsarevic in straight sets on Sunday.

Vernon’s Vasek Pospisil had the last word, but his ankle had the final say.

Fighting through the pain, Pospisil fought in vain (and pain) to extend Canada’s run at the 2013 Davis Cup, but lost in three sets to Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic – 7-6, 6-2, 7-6 – and was reduced to tears after the match.

The ecstasy and the agony,” summed up Yahoo’s Neil Acharya (Eh Game). How true.

Pospisil told Sportnet’s Arash Madani his tears were form the loss, not the ankle, and Serbia will take it. Led by Tipsarevic and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, the Serbs routed their final individual matches to finish the five-game semi-final, 3-2.

“I heard some pops, which isn’t good,” Madani quoted Pospisil as saying. “My ankle is swollen… The fact I was able to walk out of there is a good thing.”

Pospisil was 0-2 in his singles matches, but won his doubles match with longtime Canadian stud Daniel Nestor on Saturday.

Earlier on Sunday, Ontario’s Milos Raonic lost to Djokovic, also in straight sets – 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 – but the world’s No. 1 had some flattering words for both Canada’s singles players, and the country’s growing tennis culture:
