Three Greater Victoria girl’s basketball teams fell just short of earning a provincial title this past Saturday (March 4) at the Langley Events Centre.
The Abbotsford Panthers defeated the Saint Michaels University School Blue Jags for the 3A crown in a 67-64 nail-biter thanks to an incredible performance from Panthers guard Malia Lenz.
Lenz finished with 41 points and 11 rebounds. and St. Michaels was led by forward Makena Anderson’s 19 points.
The championship featured four ties and five lead changes.
The Pacific Christian Pacers also came away with a silver medal in 2A action.
The Mulgrave Titans took home the gold with an impressive 91-53 win behind Lucy Xu’s 30 points, and Joaleah Tupas-Singh paced Pacific Christian with 16 points.
The Titans were the top-ranked team all season.
The Brookswood Bobcats earned the Junior championship banner with a 49-36 come-from-behind victory over the Oak Bay Breakers.
The Breakers came out hot and finished the first quarter with an 11-point lead thanks to three 3-pointers from Eden Henderson. The Bobcats double-teamed Henderson at every opportunity, and she was limited to one more 3-pointer and three free throws the rest of the way.
Jordyn Nohr and Ashley Vande Ven came up big for the Bobcats and each scored 19 points.
The Lambrick Park Lions Junior boys team also finished in 10th place after a 86-53 loss to Vancouver College on Feb. 28 at the Langley Events Centre.
The senior boy’s basketball championships start Wednesday (March 8) and finish Saturday.
