Two-tiered Hydro rates need re-thinking

If BC can increase the threshold of the homeowners grant, they can also help those who heat with electricity

Instead of allowing BC Hydro customers a longer period of time to pay off their climate-driven electricity bills later this spring, why not deal with the real problem: two-tier electricity rates.

If the government can find money to increase the threshold of the homeowners grant for those fortunate enough to own homes valued in excess of $1.2 million, surely they can show the same compassion for those of us that heat our homes with clean green electricity.

For example, at the very least tiers one and two could be annualized much like the current monthly payment plan utilized by many Hydro customers. This would still encourage conservation but would significantly reduce the amount of electricity many customers are currently forced to purchase in tier two.

Better yet, Hydro could raise the threshold level for tier two for all of its customers that heat their homes with clean green electricity.
