Our View: The best things about our city

We all have favourite aspects of our communities that enhance our enjoyment of living in the Capital Region.

Whether it’s the Dallas Road walkway, the beaches at Witty’s Lagoon or Willows, the view from atop Mount Douglas or other gems and jewels, Greater Victoria has plenty of characteristics to love that keep our minds and bodies active.

Whether it’s the Dallas Road walkway, the beaches at Witty’s Lagoon or Willows, the view from atop Mount Douglas or other gems and jewels, Greater Victoria has plenty of characteristics to love that keep our minds and bodies active.

In this year’s Best of the City, we present what we think are interesting, sometimes behind-the-scenes stories on some of the things readers enjoy most, top-10 lists of the best places or activities, and of course, your top three selections in more than 100 activity, retail and culinary categories.

Displaying a Best of the City plaque or certificate has become akin to wearing a badge of honour, one that encourages people to stop in and have a look because there’s something special going on.

Our communities have many special things worth checking out. We encourage you to give Best of the City a read. You’ll no doubt find some new things to love about your city.

Team forges royal link to past

The name for Victoria’s new Western Hockey League franchise, the Royals, is appropriate.

Victoria has long been considered, by those in the tourist trade at least, as “a little bit of old England.” And we are, after all, named after a British monarch.

But the nickname has been used by other teams, including the Royals Athletic Association, whose field lacrosse team competed from 1908 to 1913 at what would become Royal Athletic Park.

The name is more romantic than the other frontrunners, Capitals, Eagles or Destroyers. But it makes sense given our links to all things royal – not to mention the surge in popularity of royals with the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
