Re: Martin Riley’s letter “Drivers over a barrel”. The only reason you are complaining of $1.20 per litre prices is because it was so recently below $1 per litre.
It is so cheap in Washington state because their taxes are lower. If you’re going to make comparisons, the price of gas in Venezuela is $0.02 per litre, why don’t you go live there?
The oil companies can get away with whatever they want and right now it is cold on the east coast, unlike here, so the demand for oil is much higher, hence I would expect the price to go up. I’m no economist, but I understand that.
You live in Oak Bay, take the bus or a bike if it’s too expensive for you. I find it quite easy to get around here via both methods. Better yet, put your money where your mouth is and go buy an electric car if it bothers you so much instead of complaining to your local periodical.
