Local First Nations presence was missing from Tea Party parade

The Oak Bay Parade and Tea Party June 4 were a blast for the Oak Bay neighbourhood.

A newcomer to Victoria, I sat on the curb on Estevan Avenue with my family among the happy crowd to watch the parade, led by Oak Bay’s finest and followed by the bagpipers, bands, hobby clubs, numerous floats, the Second World War vehicles.

It was a great parade.

Afterwards, I asked long-time residents of Oak Bay about what seemed to be absent from the parade: a First Nations presence – a float, marchers, some trace of the original Oak Bay land-dwellers mentioned on Willows Beach. No one knew.

Am I missing something here?
