Every day in Saanich, whether it’s driving down our roads, enjoying a walk in the park, or chatting with neighbours over the fence, we all benefit from the quiet work of our public works and parks crews at the Saanich Operations Centre (SOC). From fixing potholes to maintaining water mains and keeping our organics carts on schedule, these dedicated folks ensure our community runs smoothly – even if we only notice their efforts when something goes wrong.

For over 60 years, the SOC has been an almost invisible cornerstone of our community, quietly supporting our way of life. But as Saanich grows and our needs evolve, it’s clear that our trusty service hub is ready for a modern update. We all deserve a facility that not only meets today’s demands but also reflects the pride we have in our neighbourhood.

Our redevelopment plan, based on the Strategic Facilities Master Plan, is about more than new buildings. It’s about making sure that the essential services we rely on – from the clean tap water we enjoy to the safe, well-kept streets – are delivered efficiently, effectively, and sustainably. Our current facilities have served us well, but after nearly 20 years beyond their intended lifespan, they’re beginning to demand more resources just to keep up.

Upgrading the SOC will provide our hardworking staff with a better, more efficient environment, and it’s an investment in the future of our community. We’re not stopping at improved public works facilities. Our vision includes adding more housing, dynamic commercial and retail spaces, and revitalizing natural amenities that make our neighbourhoods even more inviting.

This isn’t just an infrastructure project – it’s about enhancing the daily lives of every Saanich resident. By aligning with our 2050 net-zero goals, boosting climate resilience, and promoting energy efficiency alongside active transportation, we’re ensuring that Saanich remains a connected, sustainable, and vibrant place to live.

Our team is working hard to plan for the needs of every person in our community. Together, we’re paving the way for a brighter future – one that honours our past, supports our present, and builds a legacy for the generations to come.

I invite you to learn more about the vision at saanich.ca/socplan or by visiting in person with the redevelopment team on May 24 between 1 and 5 p.m. at the Saanich Operations Centre bucket shed (1040 McKenzie Ave.). This is your opportunity to meet with staff, have your questions answered and learn more about the project and borrowing process (AAP).
