Let me get this straight, Oak Bay already has illegal secondary suites, and now we are celebrating council’s decision to look into legalizing them.
Yes but for everybody’s safety they have to be built to code which means spending tens of thousands of dollars to register your suite as legal. I do not think the average Oak Bayer will benefit from this, as many people will choose not to spend the extra money. Like Victoria, people will choose not to register and will continue like always. Meanwhile it is the developers, realtors and certain members of council that stand to benefit the most, as they will now be able to put in a brand new suite and charge even more.
