Ironic opposition

Letter writers call deer cull cruel but admits to hunting animals themselves

Marie and Real LePage from Montreal write to express their concern about the deer cull. Many people in Oak Bay share that concern.

The LePages argue that trapping of deer is “not fair” and is “cruel”. Perhaps so, but the LePages are hunters themselves who doubtless sometimes wound, but fail to kill, an animal, leading perhaps to a slow and agonising death.

The cull is a divisive topic, and many people – myself included – feel uncomfortable with all the options. Nevertheless, to be told by someone who hunts that a cull is “unfair” is a considerable irony.
