The Victoria Events Centre (VEC) is partnering with five local production companies and artists to put together Womxn’s Week, a week-long series of events designed to empower and celebrate women, those who identify as women and the feminine spirit.

The events all circle around International Women’s Day on March 8.

Starting on March 4, the VEC will host a movie night and pop-up shops. Beginning at 6 p.m., vintage clothing and local art will be for sale, followed by the 7:15 p.m. showing of Hidden Figures. Seating will be provided, but attendees are welcome to bring blankets and camping chairs. Popcorn and drinks will be for sale.

On March 5 is the Womxn’s Week Speakeasy. The event begins at 6 p.m. with a screening of the film, Suffragette. At 8 p.m. beginner swing dance lessons kick off, as well as performances from a live swing jazz band and guest vocalists. Tickets at the door are $10 and include a free drink.

On March 6 is the Womxn’s Outer Space Variety Show, a space-themed talent show including lip syncing, skits, musical numbers, drag, dance and more. VEC is still looking for more talent for the event, so if you’ve got talent you can reach out to them.

March 8 is International Women’s Day, and to celebrate Womxn’s Week is organizing a group outing to the 7 p.m. showing of the new Captain Marvel movie at Silver City. A shuttle bus will pick up people who have purchased their tickets to get them to the show. It will also transport them back to the VEC to partake in a dance party called Tempe-Edition 5. Portions of the ticket sales for Temple will be donated to the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre. The main performer will be Mandai, who frequents the underground bass scene in Vancouver.

March 9 brings aerobics and mimosas. Attendees are encouraged to dress up in their silliest aerobics outfits so they can participate along with retro aerobics videos played over a big screen– with Prosecco and orange juice on the side, of course.

On March 10 it’s time to get cozy with the Vixens Burlesque, a new burlesque group featuring five local performers and one guest performer. The event is open to everyone 19-plus. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Last but not least, March 11 is Matchmaker Monday 4.0: Salty Broads in Space. The self-described “part mingling/dating event, part immerse retro variety hour and part live game show” encourages singles of all varieties to come on out and meet new people in a space-themed event. The 19-plus event is $15 at the door.

All of the week’s events are open to people of all gender expressions and sexualities.
