Visible valuables prompt vehicle smash-and-grabs

Locked doors didn’t prevent thefts from vehicles last weekend in Oak Bay.

Tempted by visible valuables, thieves broke into several vehicles Saturday by smashing windows or picking locks.

“In all likelihood, if the vehicle is locked and nothing is displayed in the car that is of value, usually they’ll leave the vehicle alone,” Deputy Chief Kent Thom said of prospective thieves.

The deadbolt to a house on Transit Road was pried off on Friday, but nothing was taken from inside.
