After 100 years in service, members of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Brittania Branch No.7 in Victoria will have to find somewhere else to go.

The Legion’s headquarters, at 780 Summt Ave. is up for sale, but not for financial reasons.

“We do not have enough members interested in taking over an executive role,” said Legion president Keith Yow. “We have 390 members on our rolls, but not enough young people to volunteer.”

While the club is dissolving, Yow said members hope to still do volunteer work, and support the community and other Legions in a style similar to the Lions Club.

The Legion No. 7 is following suit to changes seen at other Legion branches, including No. 172 in Esquimalt, which had its building shutdown in favour of a new development at 622 Admirals Rd. The Esquimalt Branch will be stationed inside the new development, a 12-storey assisted living building – upon completion.

“I don’t mind, it’s just one of those hits. You just can’t get volunteers, and it’s a problem everywhere,” Yow said. “The Shriners, the Lions… everyone is having the same problem.”

The Legion No. 7 building, which has over 5,500 sq.ft., and its surrounding lot which is an additional 10,000 sq. ft. is for sale for $1,675, 000.
