As the season of giving is upon us, the 100 top-rated Canadian Charities list for 2019 honours those who give back all year ‘round.

Of the many charities named for their financial efficiency, transparency and fair salaries, the Victoria Hospice Society was included.

“We’re really grateful for that recognition,” said Tom Arnold, the director of fund development for Victoria Hospice. “Supporting quality of life for patients and families is paramount to what we do and in order for us to do that we need donations from the community. We work really hard to be transparent with those who support us and make sure we’re giving them the maximum value for their donated dollar.”

The list, created by MoneySense, evaluates charities in Canada to help donors know how their money is being spent.

“To have organizations like MoneySense and Charity Intelligence recognize that and share that information with the community, it gives us a sense of hope,” he said. “We want the people who already support us to feel good about where their money has gone, and hopefully it gives new people the trust to invest their money with Victoria Hospice as well.”

As the year winds to a close, Victoria Hospice Society has several opportunities to give.

Until Dec. 16, the annual Celebrate A Life display will be at the Tillicum Centre or online at celebratealifevictoria.ca.

“It’s an opportunity for people to remember loved ones who are not with them this holiday season,” he said.

Victoria Hospice Society is also trying to fundraise $200,000 by the end of 2018. Donors have given $180,000 since GivingTuesday with generous offers from two anonymous groups to match a total of $100,000 for the society.
