Vehicle crash on icy highway claims life of Oak Bay woman

Car travelling south on Trans-Canada Highway struck by out-of-control car

A 55-year-old Oak Bay woman died and her 17-year-old daughter was taken to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops on Wednesday morning after a two-vehicle crash on Highway 1, five kilometres north of Spences Bridge in B.C.'s southern Interior.

Lytton RCMP reported that a northbound GMC Tracker, driven by an 18-year-old Fort Langley man, lost control of his vehicle on icy road conditions and swerved into the path of a Saturn SL1 car being driven south by the woman.

The woman, whose name has not been released pending notification of next-of-kin, died at the scene, while her daughter was rushed to hospital by ambulance. The man driving the other car had to be extricated from his vehicle and was airlifted to hospital in Kamloops.

There was no word Thursday morning on the condition of either teen. The incident is still being investigated.
