UVic taxes in lieu issue on the table at UBCM

Union of BC Municipalities motion set for vote during this week’s convention in Victoria

Coun. Hazel Braithwaite plans to petition other communities across Victoria and the province to back her Union of BC Municipalities motion set for vote during this week’s convention in Victoria.

She sent information around Greater Victoria to seek support last week in her bid to have the province amend the University Act regarding the grants-in-lieu of taxes formula.

She wants that formula to better reflect forgone municipal taxes and have rates paid by universities be in keeping with payment-in-lieu-of-taxes paid by the Government of Canada for federal properties.

“We do want it to be on par or on level with what the federal government pays on federal properties,” Braithwaite said. “I think we’ll get a lot of support yet again at UBCM.”

In 2003 Oak Bay received more than $72,000 for grants-in-lieu of taxes for the University of Victoria; this year the district received about $55,000.
