Oak Bay fire continues to investigate a fire in the 900-block of Transit Road Thursday (Feb. 2) afternoon, but deem it not suspicious.

The multi-storey home was ablaze on the first floor when the local department arrived around 3 p.m., said Fire Chief Dave Cockle.

The fire department rescued a pet from the home after first restraining its owner who attempted to go back into the blaze.

The dog was found unconscious inside the home during firefighters’ primary search.

“We had to pull him out of the building,” Cockle said. Oak Bay fire revived the mid-sized animal using specialized equipment. The oxygen masks were provided by the Greater Victoria Dog Obedience Training Club.

“The dog has since been taken to animal hospital,” Cockle said.

The owner, who reported no injuries, went with the pet.

Oak Bay, Victoria and Saanich fire departments responded to the fire. BC Ambulance Service was on scene and St. John’s Ambulance provided ongoing firefighter care as the home continued to smoulder late into the day. Oak Bay Emergency Program is helping the resident.

“We don’t know the cause of the fire at this point, (we’re) still investigating. It’s a significant fire,” Cockle said on the scene Thursday. “We’ll be here for a few hours.”
