Bragging rights and pediatric cancer treatment are on the line for the inaugural Oak Bay First Responders Cops for Cancer Hockey Challenge Cup kicks off Monday.

“We’re hoping this will be a well-attended event as we’d love to make this an annual fundraiser,” said Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties. Oak Bay Police Department initiated the ice hockey challenge as part of its commitment to community engagement.

Oak Bay High students face off against players from Oak Bay police and fire departments among others.

“Playing hockey with local youth is one of our community engagement initiatives,” said Bernoties. “This is meant to help us build a bridge with local youth and maintain our trusting relationship while also helping to raise money for pediatric cancer.”
