Suicide-prevention services extended six months

Need2 has a new six-month lease on life.

The suicide-prevention organization recently warned June 30 would be its last day unless new funders came forward. Since then, regional municipalities, the United Way and B.C. Gaming provided grants that will keep the doors open until December.

Need2  conducts educational programs in schools and runs an online youth forum.

It  used to operate a 24-hour crisis line before the Vancouver Island Health Authority regionalized the service in Nanaimo last year.

The Ministry of Children and Family Development is  reviewing its 2010 decision to cut its funding for Need2’s Suicide Education and Awareness program, according to the organization.
