Post-secondary students in Greater Victoria are calling on the B.C. government to help them make it to school each morning.
The Passed Up? campaign calls for the government to allocate carbon tax money to more adequately fund public transit, which students believe would stop them from being left behind on busy bus routes during peak hours.
Students say full buses are passing them by during the morning commute.
“Students need to have reliable bus service to be able to make it to classes on time,” Tara Paterson, chair of the University of Victoria Students’ Society, said in a release. “B.C. Transit has many innovative ideas to improve service, but they are held back by the lack of funding coming from the provincial government.”
UVic and Camosun students contribute nearly $5 million to transit through the U-Pass program, Paterson said, adding that 30 per cent of UVic students and 50 per cent of Camosun students take public transit.
