Stolen bike recognized by owner’s friend

When a man checking out weekend garage sales saw a stranger pedalling his friend’s stolen bike, he snapped a quick photo, then approached the cyclist.

The decked-out bike, with aftermarket red pedals and special wheels, had been reported stolen from Oak Bay Recreation Centre on April 29. The next day it was recognized by the garage sale-goer, who didn’t recognize its rider.

The shopper asked the rider when he had acquired his new ride before informing him the wheels belonged to a friend. When he mentioned police were on their way, the cyclist sped off. Using the photo, police found a suspect with the bike in the 2200 block of Cadboro Bay Road on May 2.

Officers recommended a charge of possession of stolen property against a 33-year-old man. The bike was returned to its owner.
